about.

LandIQ is a digital planning tool used by the NSW Government to assess land suitability based on a wide range of environmental, zoning, and infrastructure datasets. Designed to support better-informed land development decisions, the platform consolidates complex geospatial data into a centralized mapping and reporting interface.

Our team was subcontracted by WSP, a global engineering and design consultancy, to conduct a UX/UI audit of the platform. The objective was to evaluate the usability, accessibility, and scalability of LandIQ’s current interface—and to provide actionable design recommendations that would improve clarity, efficiency, and long-term adaptability for government stakeholders.

challenge.

While LandIQ was already live and in active use by planning teams within the NSW Government, the interface presented significant usability and design challenges:

  • Data-heavy screens lacked clear hierarchy and readability.

  • Navigational patterns were inconsistent, leading to user friction.

  • Limited mobile responsiveness and accessibility support.

  • Visual design did not scale well across expanding features and datasets.

our approach

  • Conducted a UX audit covering key workflows, including map exploration, layer toggling, and site analysis.

  • Reviewed interface design through the lens of usability heuristics and WCAG accessibility standards.

  • Identified gaps in content clarity, interaction patterns, and visual consistency.

  • Delivered annotated wireframes outlining structural and layout improvements.

  • Proposed a component-based UI framework to support future development and feature scalability.

Throughout, we worked collaboratively with WSP and LandIQ’s internal teams to ensure alignment with business goals, user expectations, and technical constraints.

results.

Our audit resulted in a strategic, design-led roadmap for improving the platform experience:

  • A prioritized list of UX issues and interface pain points, with supporting rationale and visual references.

  • A set of design principles to guide future development—focusing on clarity, modularity, and accessibility.

  • Recommendations for a scalable design system to support visual cohesion and growth.

  • Tactical suggestions for improving map-layer interactions, data legibility, and navigation efficiency.

Our contribution provided LandIQ and WSP with a clear foundation to modernize the platform—helping ensure it remains a trusted, efficient tool for land-use planning in NSW.
